Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Everything you need to know about car taxes in Belgium.
How is road and registration tax calculated in Belgium?
In Belgium, automotive taxation is decentralized across three regions: Flanders, Wallonia, and Brussels. Each region has distinct rules for the one-time registration tax (TMC / BIV) and the recurring annual road tax. In Flanders, taxes are calculated using an environmental formula based on CO2, Euro standards, and fuel type. In Wallonia, a formula integrating power (kW), CO2 (WLTP), mass (MMA), and propulsion technology applies. In Brussels, taxes are based on engine displacement (CV) and power (kW).
Do electric vehicles pay road taxes in Belgium in 2026?
Starting January 1, 2026, Flanders introduced a mandatory flat registration tax of €61.50 and an annual road tax of €105.30 for newly registered 100% electric cars. In Wallonia, EVs pay a minimal registration fee (minimum €50) and a base annual fee of €102.96. In Brussels, EVs pay €75.79 (or €61.50 for leasing).
What is ATN / VAA (Benefit in Kind) for company cars in Belgium?
ATN (in French) or VAA (in Dutch) is the taxable benefit in kind assessed when an employee or company director uses a company car for private purposes. It is calculated based on the car's catalog value incl. VAT, vehicle age, and CO2 emissions compared to federal reference levels.
